Hey Folks,
"Summer...it's like a merry-go-round
Summer, summer, summer
It turn's me upside down"
—Ric Ocasek, The Cars "Magic" ©1984 Lido Music
'Sounds like Ric Ocasek does not know how to ride a
merry-go-round properly.
The point is: Summer's here! Although at the Work
Song Productions home office, the Snap-on tool calendar is
still stuck on February, but only because we can't quite say
goodbye to that particular calendar girl. We've got
some great shows coming your way this month! I know we
say that every month, but just like a broken wall clock, every
once in a while it's right, you know? It's like the law
of averages. Actually, I don't know if the law of
averages has anything to do with precision clockwork so that
may not be a good analogy, but you get what I'm saying.
We've got an absolutely fabulous lineup of shows featuring
terrific
out-of-town
guests and the whole bit. We're going to have more
fun than a tornado in a trailer park. You don't want to
miss out on this! So, grab a felt marker and jot down
these dates on the back of a napkin, envelope, air sickness
bag, or what-have-you.
SAT. JUNE 2nd 7:30PM—ATLANTIC BAR &
GRILL—CREATURE COMFORT: A MUSICAL BENEFIT FOR FRIENDS OF CHICAGO
ANIMAL CARE AND CONTROL
5062 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago, IL 60625
We are pleased to be invited to take part in a night of
entertainment to benefit cute little critters here in Chicago! We
are on a bill with Donna Adler, a Wizard of Sorts, The Christmas
Mountain Boys, Rockin' Rick Wells & Greg Steele, and Russell,
Gray, & Poot. What a show!
FRI. JUNE 8th 9:30PM—MOHER PUBLIC HOUSE
5310 W. Devon Ave., Chicago, IL 60646
We are back at Moher Public House where the beers are cold, the
waitstaff cool, the welcome warm, and the music hot. We are
going to be pumpin' the wattage all through your cottage. We are
going to spit rhymes like New Jack whips Vic Grimes. Lemme break
it down for you: It's on like Judge Judy. Now put your hands in
the air. Lemme hear ya say, "Yeah"!
THURS., JUNE 21st
9:00PM—THE GREEN ROOM AT THE ABBEY PUB—MARK ZEUS & KEN
GAINES
3420 W. Grace, Chicago, IL 60618
A wonderfully intimate setting, two tremendous songwriters, a well
stocked bar, an intoxicating summer night. If any of these
elements strikes your fancy, imagine throwing all of them together
at once with NO COVER! This is what we're talking about.
Mark Zeus will be
returning at his ol' stompin' grounds with his good buddy
Ken Gaines, a
mainstay of the Houston songwriter scene for a special show. I'll
be there and you should be there too because it will truly be a
great place to be.
FRI., JUNE 22nd
8:00PM—LOVELL'S OF LAKE FOREST—MARK ZEUS & MARLON ST. JOHN
915 S. Waukegan Rd., Lake Forest, IL 60045
The "2012 Return of Zeus Tour" stops at "The Captain's Quarters",
a fav-or-ite watering hole of ours. When Zeus makes his way back
to Chicago from Houston, we always try to play here. In 2005 for
our first visit, Jay Lovell, who lived in Houston for over 20
years, and Mark traded stories on all the hidden treasures that
Houston holds and how important good air-conditioning is in a
place that routinely hits 110 degrees in the summer. We've been
playing here ever since.
SAT., JUNE 23rd 8:00PM—HONKY TONK BBQ—MARK
ZEUS & MARLON ST. JOHN
1213 W. 18th St., Chicago, IL 60608
It is our triumphant return to the Honky Tonk, where the Lone
Star's cold, the spicy BBQ hot, the music's twangy, and the dance
floor's crowded. Don't miss the brisket! Come early; leave when we
load out; you won't be sorry.
SUN., JUNE 24th 8:00PM—UNCOMMON GROUND ON
CLARK
1214 W. Grace St., Chicago, IL 60613
Join us for a special evening with two of Houston's finest
singer-songwriters. Mark Zeus is familiar to many folks in the
Chicago area and a mainstay of the Houston songwriter scene with 3
solo releases currently available and 2 featuring his band
Thunderboltz all on the Stone Face Records label. Ken Gaines, who
is in his 11th year hosting the popular Songwriter Series at
Houston's Anderson Fair, recently opened at Kerrville on May 21st
and currently has two releases available. These two are coming
into town for a rare appearance together and, if you are an
aficionado of the art of original song, this show is a must see.
Attention all Zeus fans: your appearance is hereby
respectfully requested at the above shows!
And there you have it! We really should not be putting up a
bunch of shows with this much fun without first obtaining a
license from the State of Euphoria, but we're doing it
anyway! As always, we look forward to seeing you
where and
when we can.
With warmest regards,
Marlon St. John

Q: What did it say
on the blues singer's tombstone?
A: "I didn't wake up this mornin'..."
