Hey Folks,
Welcome to the August Issue of Where and When. We've been
real busy trying to decipher the hand signals in women's beach
volleyball, but we believe we may have time to do a few shows
this month. Also Murray, our agent, insists that we sing
for our supper, so sing we shall. But in a larger sense,
we are on a mission—a mission to make sure that live
acoustic music continues to have a place in this lower mundane
institute; a mission to beat back the tide of electronic music
and try to win back gigs from the humorless twits known as DJs
with their club beatz and their $400 headphones. They can
go play their stereo at home! Make room for some
dreadnaughts! And that's where you come in: our
mission can only succeed with your help. [Cue french
horns] - By choosing to go where live music can be heard
you help affirm in a small way that music is what comes out of
instruments and not just turntables and laptops. In this
way, you take part in the grand tradition of acoustic music that
is as long as the Pharaoh's beard.
We have got some truly lovely shows coming up this month.
Let's break it down, shall we?
FRI. AUGUST 10th 9:30PM—NORTON'S RESTAURANT
1905 Sheridan Rd., Highland Park, IL 60035
We are pleased to be making our Norton's debut. This place
hosts a weekly lineup of good entertainment, and they like to keep
things lively. If you can't party with the big dogs, go under the
porch and sleep in the shade, isn't that right? Nice
surroundings, full bar, great menu...and us! Kinda sounds inviting
now doesn't it?
SAT. AUGUST 11th 8:00PM—LOVELL'S OF LAKE
FOREST
915 S. Waukegan Rd., Lake Forest, IL 60045
Beneath a suburban village, down a flight of seemingly
nondescript stairs, within an otherwise normal fine dining
establishment, lies a world of intrigue and mystique where
casual happenstance can meet freak occurrence. This is the
world of The Captain's Quarters and all who may enter here on
this particular night will be treated to an evening of almost
limitless wonder...plus we will be playing some tunes, so feel
free to join us.
SAT. AUGUST 18th
7:30PM—HONKY TONK BBQ
1213 W. 18th St., Chicago IL 60608
You've probably heard my enthusiastic recommendation of this place
before from when I gigged here with Mark Zeus, but our agent
Murray recently booked 'The Show' into this venerable Pilsen
saloon. Mouth watering slabs, savory brisket, Lone Star
beer, this place has it all, and their superb staff serve it too
you like you're their favorite cousin. We are looking
forward to this date! Thanks, Murray! Your 10% is in the
mail.
SAT. AUGUST 25th 7:00PM—HOUSE CONCERT
2603 W. Adams, Muncie, IN 47302
Shari Flanders has been hosting a series of house concerts in the
gorgeous setting of her home in Muncie, Indiana for some time now.
I am pleased to once again be a part this series, and to meet up
with my waybacks, as in way back when we kicked up some dust in
this place playing music and whatnot. Hopefully nights like this
will prove we still do. I will be joined by the estimable
Jamie Johnson.
THURS. AUGUST 30th 9:00PM—GRACE STREET TAP
3759 N. Western Ave., Chicago, IL 60618
Instead of sitting at home on a Thursday night watching The Cosby Show and Cheers—wait, what decade am I in?—ANYWAY, you should get out and experience the mighty power of The Kris & Marlon Show at the Grace Street Tap. Their terrific beer selection can't help but make us sound better to your ears.
And there you have it! Five great chances to catch "The
Show" in this summer. As always, we look forward to seeing
you
where
and when we can.
With warmest regards,
Marlon St. John
