Issue 25 March, 2013

Hey Folks,

After a brief hiatus.  We have returned to regale you in song.  You know, if you can't stay still enough, then make noize with the big boys.  Am I right?  Murray, our booking agent, called and mentioned he would take us on again as clients since his plans to book Mitt Romney on the lecture circuit fell through.  I figured we owe him after all we've been through and all.  Besides, he has the new 2013 Snap-On calendar with all the gorgeous tools we had not seen yet.  The office couch was right where we left it an everything.  So pick up a notebook, rosin up your pen, and fiddle with it!  Here are the new shows:

Bridie PicSAT., MARCH 2nd 9:00PM — BRIDIE McKENNA'S

The Kris & Marlon Show

254 Green Bay Road, Highwood, IL 60040

If there is one thing we can't stand it's sitting down too long. So we're gonna head out to Bridie McKenna's (a favorite watering hole of Spencer Tracy's if this Ouiji board is correct) and play some tunes. You're welcome to come with if you want to. Although, if you wind up staying home and we wind up having a good time, we can't be held responsible if you don't. Fair's fair.

Anderson FairTHURS., MARCH 7th 9:00PM — ANDERSON FAIR

Mark Zeus with Marlon St. John

2007 Grant St. Houston TX 77006

For a rancher, the State of Texas possibly calls to mind longhorns big as Ford F150s. For a songwriter, Texas tends to call to mind people like Robert Earl Keen, Nancy Griffith, Guy Clark, Lyle Lovett and many others. They loom large, and they all have played the stage at Houston's Anderson Fair. A place hippies have called home since before there were such a thing as hippies. As luck would have it, I'm fixing to play the Songwriter Showcase at Anderson Fair on Thursday, March 7th—and by fixing to play, I mean that I keep thinking of all the possible ways for me to screw up my set. Fortunately, guys like Ken Gaines, Wayne Wilkerson, and Keith Rea, all unflinching and unflappable pros, will be on hand to keep things moving along. If you're in Houston around that time, do drop in.

ReHABFRI., MARCH 8th 8:00PM — HOUSTON AVE. BAR Re:HAB

Mark Zeus with Marlon St. John

1920 Houston Ave, Houston, Texas 77007

Finally, someone had the good sense to name their drinking establishment Re:HAB. Now, folks can go there and say they've been to rehab. Funny no one thought of this sooner. Finally, I get to go there. Things have a way of working out.

Texas TraditionSAT., MARCH 9th 8:00PM — TEXAS TRADITION

Mark Zeus with Marlon St. John

5321 Highway Blvd, Katy, Texas 77494-1306

On this night, I will be accompanying Texas troubadour (and Chicago transplant) Mark Zeus to his regular gig at Texas Tradition in Katy, TX. It is my 2nd appearance at Texas Tradition, so to them I'm now a second cousin to another brother. You are only a stranger there once. This place is so down home, you have to mind yourself not to slam the screen door else Grandma will slap your backside. The food is good, and could only be better if your mother, bless her soul, made it herself.

Lovell's PicFRI., MARCH 15th 8:00PM — LOVELL'S OF LAKE FOREST — THE CAPTAIN'S QUARTERS

The Kris & Marlon Show

915 South Waukegan, Lake Forest, Illinois 60045

Old school, baby. No beats. No Midi. No sidechain compression and EQ synth wave modulations. Don't need it. Just two flat tops, some good tunes and a nice room. It's a lounge, you know. We play lounge music Sammy Davis Jr. style. You know what I'm talking about? Let me break it down for you: we're all acoustic in here. No subwoofers. Sinatra never needed a subwoofer. He did alright. Ask the waiter for a nice glass of wine, or what have you. Ask him to recommend an entree. Maybe try the crab cakes. Life is what you try. Drum your fingers on the table to the music, and live a little. That's what I'm saying.

Moher PicSAT., MARCH 16th 9:30PM — MOHER PUBLIC HOUSE

Nick Gonzales and Marlon St. John

5310 W. Devon Ave., Chicago, IL 60646

There's an old Irish saying: "May you die in bed at ninety-five shot by a jealous husband." If St. Patrick's day can't come soon enough for you, we've got just the thing: St. Patrick's Day Eve at Moher Public House, a fine and friendly pub if ever was. Nick Gonzales and yours truly will be on hand to make a joyful noise. The spirit of St. Patrick will roll in on a shamrock colored Harley-Davidson around midnight. You can't miss it if you're there.

Bridie PicSAT., MARCH 23rd 9:30PM — BRIDIE McKENNA'S

Nick Gonzales and Marlon St. John

254 Green Bay Road, Highwood, IL 60040

If there is something wrong with the concept of a quality Irish pub, I've yet to find out what it is: delicious hearty food, prompt and courteous servers, talented and knowledgeable bartenders, casual and comfortable surroundings and friendly faces. Bridie McKenna's in Highwood, IL has taken this simple but enduring idea and fashioned a first rate establishment out of it that is a great experience for the whole family. And to top it all off, they offer a regular selection of live entertainment for their guests. You can't help but like a place like that. Nick Gonzales and I will be providing an evenings worth of songs that you will likely be familiar with, but don't often hear. There will be a fire in the fireplace and a table waiting for you. It will be Saturday Night all across America, and there will never be another exactly like it for as long as you live.

In The Round PicFAIR WARNINGS (APRIL):

But wait!  There's more...The Return of Zeus Tour starts Thursday, April 4th at The Abbey Pub!  In The Round at The Brownstone featuring Mark Zeus, Beth Kille, and your's truly—a special show just announced—will be an all acoustic evening Sunday, April 7th at 7:00PM helping to kick off the brand new Open Mic at The Brownstone Tavern (for. The Clearwater Saloon) starting Wednesdays April 10th, and much, much more ahead...

As always, we look forward to seeing you where and when we can.

With warmest regards,
