TSFH BANNER
Issue 52 - August 29, 2024

Hi Folks,

It's late, late summer and the corner of this month's Snap On Tool calendar page is swaying in the occasional breeze from the rotating fan yawning from side to side in Work Song Production's office over the taxidermy supply store in downtown Jefferson Park. Murray, our AI powered robotic booking agent, is grimacing at an Ouija board spread out on his desk as he prospects for new gigs. All things considered, he has outdone himself scaring up new bookings. Once again, he has more than earned his commission which he will gladly pocket along with most if not all of our performance fees. He is as ruthless as Col. Tom Parker as he rubs his animatronic fingers together with glee before smashing a distracted fly that has settled on the game board.

"Got 'em! he chimes. Rare is the moment when a smile passes momentarily across his face. Just being there to stand witness to such a thing makes spending time with such a grim piece of office equipment like Murray almost worthwhile. Here are our upcoming gigs.

Grandpa's Place
1868 Prairie St. Glenview, IL 60026

Our bassist has returned from abroad and we are reunited as a trio! This will be Abi's first show since abandoning the act for grad school. But we got by just fine, thanks. Ella took up the bass in her absence and performed splendidly. Did the Beach Boys carry on when Brian Wilson decided to stay behind from one of their tours? They sure did. They got Glen Campbell to fill in and the audience never knew the difference. Did the Eagles collapse when Bernie Leadon left the band? Joe Walsh says, "No!"  Glad to have you back, Abi. But don't think that a graduate degree will increase your share of performance fees. Murray pays what he pays according to his own cruel algorithm.

Montrose Saloon
2933 W. Montrose Ave., Chicago, IL 60618

Abi and I will be playing a set along with Ménage à Trio, Something Nice About Nowhere and The Magikists at one of our favorite places in the whole wide world, Montrose Saloon. A place that to know is to love, and we love this place. We will be appearing as a duo as Ella is not quite old enough to get past the gentleman working the door. Teenagers may be taking over the world as we know it, but they still haven't taken over Montrose Saloon, and that is probably a good thing. Once she does get old enough, will I be too old to rock-n-roll anymore? Keith Richards says, "No!"

A man appears out of the lengthening shadows of twilight. Stonehenge was built to mark his eventual birthday. He got himself a guitar and learned how to make it talk. Locals ask him for directions. He once gave a pep talk so compelling both teams won. He is Mark Zeus and he is returning for a couple-tree shows before disappearing once again into what Tom Waits once called the "dark, warm, narcotic American night."   This is one of those shows.

Finnegan's Pub

Mark and I will be back once again at one of our favorite places in the whole wide world, Finnegan's Pub on Highway 30 just about a toe or two east of the state line in Indiana. It is located along what once was the Sauk Trail which ran from Rock Island on the Mississippi all the way up to Ypsilanti. The Potawatomi, Pawnee, Miami, and Delaware use to follow bison along the trail as they migrated north. It is thought that Paleoindians such as the Clovis people may have followed Mastodons along the same routes as well, and it is possible the trails here go back to pre-history. I personally haven't found any such fossils so far along the trail, but this time I just might. You just gotta know where to look, right?

The Music Box Listening Room
613 W Winter Ave., Greenville, IL 62246

The gals and I will be back at our favorite place in the whole wide world, The Music Box, as guests of our hosts, Erin O'Toole and Dale Hanabarger. I know we have said that Grandpa's Place is our favorite place in the whole wide world and Finnegan's Pub is one too. They are all like children to us and it is hard to pick a favorite, you see. But the green room at The Music Box is truly a favorite and so is the audience. The bottom's low and the treble clear with the system there as well, so it is hard to top. If you are having your eyebrows waxed on that day and can't quite make it to Greenville, Illinois, we will try to share a video with you. This place is one of the finest musical establishments on our home planet and, if you ever head down to the Mastodon State Historic Site just south of St. Louis, you should drop in and say hi. It's right along the way.

Well, that about fries it up in a pan for now. If you have hung in there up to now, it has been a pleasure hanging with you. We hope to see you Where and When we can.

With warmest regards,

Marlon St. John

Q. How many female jazz vocalists does it take to perform "Summertime"?
A. Geez...all of them, apparently.
